You do not need to rebuild your product to add AI. Most useful AI features attach to an existing application through an API, one focused screen change, and the data you already have.
The failures come from starting with the model instead of the workflow. This article starts with the workflow.
Pick the job where AI clearly beats a form
Good first features share a pattern: the input is messy (free text, documents, images) and the output is checkable. Summarising a support thread, drafting a reply, extracting fields from a PDF, or answering questions from your help centre all qualify.
Avoid features where a wrong answer is invisible and expensive. If nobody can tell the AI made an error, add a review step or choose a different first feature.
Connect through APIs, not surgery
Call model APIs from a small server-side service that your application talks to. That keeps keys secret, lets you change providers, and gives you one place for logging, rate limits, and cost controls.
Ground answers in your data with retrieval: index the documents or records the feature may use, search them per request, and pass only the relevant passages to the model. This is the RAG pattern, and it is what makes answers specific instead of generic.
Design for slow and wrong
Model calls are slower and less predictable than database queries. Show progress, stream responses where it helps, set timeouts, and keep the manual path available when the AI is down or unsure.
Log prompts, retrieved sources, outputs, latency, and cost from day one. Without those logs you cannot answer the only question that matters later: is this feature actually helping?
- Timeout and a visible fallback for every AI call
- Human edit/approve step for anything customer-facing
- Logging of inputs, sources, outputs, latency, and cost
- A simple quality check: sample outputs reviewed weekly at first
Measure, then expand
Define success before launch: time saved per task, acceptance rate of AI drafts, or deflection of repeated questions. Compare against the manual baseline for a few weeks, fix the worst failures, and only then add the second AI feature.
Common questions
Only the AI feature waits on the model if it is isolated behind its own API with timeouts and loading states. The rest of the product should never block on an AI call.
Model APIs process what you send. Send only what the feature needs, avoid personal data where possible, and check each provider's retention terms — or use retrieval so raw databases stay in your systems.
